SMT, JewelSuite, CMG Announce Seismic To Simulation (STS) Alliance
Alliance Gives Customers New Alternative. Unifies Interpretation, Modeling and Simulation
The STS Alliance integrates best-of-breed technologies encompassing all three components of the prospect evaluation workflow – interpretation, modeling, and simulation.
The STS Alliance (www.stsalliance.com) gives customers a resolution to a long standing industry dilemma. Energy companies have had to choose either a single vendor solution that is integrated but not cutting edge, or cherry pick top technologies and sacrifice integration. With the STS Alliance, customers can have the best of both worlds.
The Alliance brings together unique science from each of the partners. SMT offers its patent-pending KINGDOM Illuminator™ technology to improve seismic interpretation speed and accuracy. JewelSuite™ delivers its JewelGrid faulted S-grid modeling approach that overcomes the technical issues that arise from existing “first generation” gridding approaches. CMG provides high performance simulation for all reservoir types, including conventional oil and gas and heavy oil.
For the first time, the geophysicist, the geologist, and the engineer can all choose the top technology for their respective discipline and still easily collaborate with each other.

KINGDOM Data Management in KINGDOM 8.5
KINGDOM Data Management replaces OpenKINGDOM Domain, providing new and improved functionality to the next generation of SMT’s project and data management solution. Existing OpenKINGDOM Domain customers will receive KINGDOM Data Management automatically at no additional charge.

KINGDOM Data Management provides a full suite of tools to streamline the process of data quality control and management. Run QC scripts on well data to locate problems from a data load and correct erroneous values directly in the interface. Use the project comparison, data query tools within and across projects to create detailed data reports.

In addition, KINGDOM Data Management now provides wholly embedded OpenSpirit tools to allow data transfer between KINGDOM projects. With KINGDOM Data Management, no additional OpenSpirit licenses or configuration are necessary. These tools allow any company to leverage the benefits of data transfer with the same ease of use that KINGDOM is known for.

Key Features
- KINGDOM Catalog Builder searches your networks, computers and folders for KINGDOM projects, then inventories key data components for further use and analysis
- Project Explorer allows users to examine file structures within each project and to locate and establish connections to seismic files that may have been relocated
- Project Copy allows users to make unique copies of KINGDOM projects, with or without seismic file duplication to improve data storage management
- Project Conversion converts projects to and from Access, SQL Server or Oracle
- New! Data Transfer tools allow users to select and transfer data elements between KINGDOM projects for project consolidation or to populate project subsets
- Query Tool searches for key information (like seismic, interpretation and well data) across multiple projects without having to open each project
- New! Data Editing is now enabled for well information to allow users to quickly identify and update incorrect data fields
- Project Comparison makes it simple to look for similarities and differences between projects

KINGDOM Training Classes
KINGDOM Training Course on Improving your NAPE Prospects
DATE: January 18th - 21st, 2010 (4-Days)
PRICE: $3,000 (or $2,800 if registered 3 weeks in advanced) GET READY FOR NAPE!
SMT is offering a special pre-NAPE course designed to help you improve your NAPE prospects. Over the course of three days you will learn advanced mapping techniques, VuPAK, Rock Solid Attributes AND SMT staff will create seismic attributes for your personal project!

The area for analysis and attribute generation should be no bigger than four square miles and two seconds in time. One KINGDOM project per client. Day 4 will be devoted to private mentoring of the attribute volumes, by appointment only. The generated volumes are yours to keep, but we do require that you bring your KINGDOM project on an external hard drive when you arrive for class.
Advanced Mapping Methods - 1 1/2 Days (Monday - Tuesday morning)
Prior to the advent of computer-based modeling contoured surface models were created directly from plotted input information drawn on paper, with a priori geologic knowledge guiding the interpreter. The selection of a gridding algorithm depends on a combination of factors, most importantly the nature of the control data and the objective for the surface model.
To assist you with NAPE preparation, we will examine the following topics:
- Topographic Gridding Workflow
- Review of Grid Algorithms and Parameters:
- Color Techniques and The KINGDOM Color Toolbar
- Mapping Workflow: Conformable Surfaces and Cross-Cutting Relationships
- Mapping Workflow: Stream Channel, Grid Editor and Isopach Model Building
- Mapping Workflow: Pinnacle Reefs, Complex Surfaces and 3-D Grid Surfaces
- Mapping Workflow: Reverse Fault Structural Workflow
VuPAK 3D Visualization - 1/2 Day (Tuesday afternoon)
This course is designed for the experienced geoscientist. VuPAK is an interactive 3D visualization tool, which enables the interpreter to work with cultural, horizon, well, fault, surface and 2D and 3D seismic data more efficiently and effectively within a visualization framework. VuPAK is designed to be used with 2d/3dPAK (using either or both 2D and 3D data), AVOPAK, RSA, EarthPAK and TracePAK.
This course uses hands-on workstation exercises to address the following topics:
- Interpreting, assigning, displaying and editing faults
- Interpreting and displaying horizons, including Seeker technology
- Displaying well and log data, including tops and fault cuts
- Displaying seismic lines and/or time slices and attributes
- Animating seismic volumes
- Modifying color and light
- Volume rendering and opacity
- Posting wells and boreholes
Geological Prospecting Using Seismic Attributes (Rock Solid Attributes) - 1 Day (Wednesday)
This one-day course, driven by Rock Solid Attributes, introduces techniques for prospect generators who want to expand on conventional interpretation of 3D seismic surveys. The course demonstrates how multiple seismic attributes lead to a better understanding of structure and stratigraphy.
Benefits include:
- Reduction of stratigraphic and structural risk
- Better delineation of potential reservoirs
- Maximizing the value of older seismic data
The course features a combination of lecture and workstation exercises covering:
- History of seismic attributes
- Attribute classification:
- Instantaneous
- Wavelet-based
- Geometric
- Curvature
- Hybrid
- Brief overview of data preparation
- Workflows for using multiple attributes
Private Seismic Attribute mentoring - Thursday, by appointment
Private mentoring on seismic attribute volumes for two hours.

Monthly Technical Tip
Starting with the 8.5 release, it is possible to save maps for later retrieval. With the map active, go to Maps > Save Map. Enter the desired map name and/or contour then press OK. To retrieve a saved map, begin by having an active base map. choose Map > Open Map, then choose the desired map from the list. Note that it is possible to open another author’s map from the Open Map dialog box.

Curvature attribute analysis in a conventional play, offshore Gulf of Mexico
January 27, 2010
The development of curvature attributes has proven particularly effective at delineating fracture trends in shale gas plays. Long considered uneconomic due to low permeability, curvature delineates fracture trends that optimize permeable pathways (therefore described as unconventional plays).
Recent analysis of a gas sand in the Gulf shelf, offshore Louisiana, indicates potential applications in conventional sand reservoirs capped by shale. Using SEEKER, SMT’s new autopicking technology, a new horizon was created for a reflector previously picked by legacy 2-D and 3-D hunt algorithms. Because of the increased sensitivity of the Seeker horizon to amplitude attributes at the reflector surface, subsequent curvature algorithms exposed a surface that was relatively smooth in the producing field. In locations where the sand is nonproductive, the surface appears to be broken or compromised by swarms of short linear features. At this time, it is unclear whether the presence of gas is creating the smoothed effect; or whether the sand is in fact fracture-free, providing effective trap conditions. Further study is underway.
